BASILICA DI SAN MARCO: RESTAURO?

Nella foto qui sopra, il triste stato cui è ridotto lo gnomone della meridiana sulla colonna all'angolo della Basilica. La sua linea di fede era intarsiata in rame nel corpo della colonna, ma l'erosione solforica, come si vede, ha abbassato il marmo fino a farla cadere.

St. MARK'S BASILICA: RESTORATION?

In the picture above, the sad state of the gnomon of the sundial at the corner column of the Basilica. Its lubber's line was in copper inlayed in the body of the column, but the sulphuric corrosion, as we can see, lowered the marble till the line has fallen.

Ecco come vengono "restaurati" i preziosissimi marmi della Basilica di San Marco erosi dalla solfatazione.

Come si puo vedere dalle foto in calce, i cosiddetti restauri vengono realizzati stuccando con malta le gravissime lesioni procurate dagli agenti sulfurei emessi con i fumi delle navi.

Gli attuali amministratori continuano a concedere il passaggio in bacino San Marco e l'approdo in un porto non idoneo ai moderni transatlantici, in cambio di sponsorizzazioni e promesse dell'uso di improbabili combustibili "ecologici".

Giorno per giorno la Basilica perde parte dei suoi marmi: le statue perdono la fisionomia, le colonne una volta lisce e lucide sono rugose e simili ormai a torsoli morsicati, i capitelli perdono gli ornamenti e i preziosi lavori di cesellatura fatti con fede e perizia da grandissimi artigiani del passato.

Vediamo questi cosiddetti " restauri " più in dettaglio: come possiamo osservare nelle foto i pezzi dei marmi vengono riattaccati con malta che presto, sempre a causa dello zolfo, verrà distaccata ed erosa.

I "restauratori " hanno pensato anche di fissare i pezzi di marmo al muro con "graffette " e barre metalliche (rame), che assai presto fioriranno in solfati e nitrati provocando ulteriori danni. Un lavoro, a ben guardarlo, di grande pazienza e impegno di risorse.

Si tratta la Basilica come un vaso rotto da ricucire e incollare, senza pensare a mettere un freno al vandalo che, imperterrito, vanifica ogni sforzo di restauro continuando quotidianamente ad aggredire i marmi e le pietre di Venezia.

La Basilica, come tutti i manufatti di Venezia, per essere salvata ha bisogno prima di tutto che venga eliminato il fattore che provoca la loro rovina, cioè la solfatazione, vietando il passaggio e l'approdo delle navi in città.

Poiché non è pensabile che una Repubblica Marinara rinunci alle navi e a seguirle attraverso le epoche e le loro evoluzioni, è indispensabile che la città esprima una decisa volontà di governo competente e forte, che sottragga il Bene Comune dalle grinfie delle delinquenze di partito e di parte.

Solo così, riportando tutte le risorse pubbliche al loro legittimo uso, sarà possibile mettere in opera quei cambiamenti epocali che la città richiede con tutta la sua voce per sopravvivere e riaffermare la propria dignità fra i Popoli e le Marinerie.
Solo dopo aver superato lo scoglio della mala amministrazione avrà un senso parlare di restauri fatti con perizia e amore.

Here how are being "restored" the precious marbles of the St. Mark's Basilica, crumbled by sulphation.

As can be seen in the photos below, the so called restorations are realized plastering with mortar the critical damages caused by sulphuric pollutants coming from ships' engines fumes.

The so-called administrators carry on allowing the passage of great cruisers across the St. Mark's Basin, and the mooring in the historical port of Venice, which is not suited for the modern giant cruisers, in exchange of sponsoring and of false promises about the use of "ecological" fuels.

Day by day the Basilica looses its marbles: the statues loose their features, columns once smooth and polished are now coarse and looking like gnawed apple cores, capitals loose their ornaments and the precious carvings made by the great artisans of the past.

Let's see this "restorations" more in detail: as we can notice in the photos, the pieces of marble are sticked together again with some mortar, that will be soon detached and corroded by the sulphur.

The "restorers" also try to fix back the marbles to the walls with kind of copper cramps, that will soon flourish in sulphates and nitrates, produceing further damages. A work of great patience and resource-consuming, indeed.

The Basilica is treated like a broken vase to be stitched and glued again, without thinking to stop the vandal that, undeterred, thwarts any restoration effort, carrying daily on its attack to the marbles and the stones of Venice.

The Basilica (and as well all Venetian manufacts) needs, to be saved, first of all the lowering of the main damage factor, the sulphation; this can only be achieved preventing the ships passage and mooring inside the Historical Centre.

As it is not thinkable that a Seafaring Republic might renounce to the ships and to follow them through the epochs and their evolution, it is mandatory for the city to express a firm will of a competent and strong govern, able to subtract the Common Wealth from the clutches of the parties delinquency.

Only bringing back all public resources to their proper use, it will be possible to realize those epoch-making changements that the city requires with all her voice, to survive and to state again her dignity between the Peoples and the Marines.
Only after climbing over the drawback of the bad habits and the subsequent political corruption, there will be a sense in talking of restorations made with skill and care.
