Vai al testo italiano See commented photo evidences This Article has been ripristined after the violation of Venice ObServer system on March 02 2011 I've never been and I shall never be against the building of a bridge. I do not care if it might or not be useful to transit. But building bridges requires civilized building skills and will. Each worked stone in this city declares the ability and the engagement toward perfection of craftmans and committents. The barbarity which actually occupies Venice, on the contrary, only gives proofs of ineptitude, becoming more and more harmful to the historical, cultural and constructed Patrimony of Venice. Each small or wide "restoration" applied to the historical bridges, small or big they are, results in a immediate severe ruin of the structures. I can name the ponte della Paglia, or those along the Malpaga rio, or the one behind the Fenice Theatre, but this kind of phenomena can be observed in almost all the manufacts recently "restored". Podgy, pot-bellied of a obesity which dessiccates the shoulder while swelling abdomen and and legs, with the ankles constricted in two tight shoes, the new Calatrava bridge on the Grand Canal of Venice seems to show off exactly that moral ugliness in which it has been projected and realized. Out and out monument to the immorality, to the malpractice, to the coarseness, the born-deformed arch is at least opened to transit in this September 2008, fourtheen years after its conceiving. Might this high cost - long run labour give birth to a beautiful bridge! Instead they wedged across the Grand Canal such a industrial wreck, more and more times rehashed (see photographic evidences), slightly looking like an enormous paleozoic cod fishbone. The Calatrava's Bridge does not perform slender elegance like the Railway and Accademia ones, nor it reaches the monumental impressiveness of Rialto Bridge. "El Ponte de le Zonte" (the Bridge of Adjuncts): not the case to call the Constitutional Act in case. This name does not come from my pocket, but from an aged enterpreneur from Mestre. All sorts of "Zonte" (adjuncts): from the disrtict councils to the adjuncts of materials, of contracts and outsources, adjuncts of budget and adjuncts to remedy projecting and building errors. Adjuncts of concrete by the tons on banks that where needing averything but not heavy weight. "Ponte Zonte" (Adjuncts Bridge): simple, assonant, easy to remember, significant. Why disturb Mr. Ruini and the Constituent? If of a constitution might we have to talk, it would be a "deformed constitution", perhaps even invalidateing to the Public Service. Or was it this, the real deep aim of the Calatrava bridge? To enclose in a monument the athmosphere of distrust towards principles and authority of Italian Constitution which thicker and thicker snakes across Population? The Calatrava bridge in Venice perfectly suits this aim: with its multiple archesroughly joined between them, well it recalls the smokey negotiations, the pacts signed but not agreed, which has been the melting pot of that Italian democratic Republic Constitutive Text. With the arbitrary rhythm of its out of level steps, the Calatrava bridge enlightens the chaotization of moral and statal hierarchies in the epochal fresco. The structure is fullfilled with such messages: Which better significate, for the redundancy of ribs, than the bureaucratic and administrative muddle, intended, like the ribs of the bridge, to sustain a lopsided and patched constitutional arch? The same Calatrava’s favourite shape, that of the mellon skin, does it not point out the rudeness of inhabitants and visitors in throwing garbage into the water? Some might say I exagerate, but I did'nt yet considered the effect of Calatrava bridge constructions on literary, chronicle and legal production in the years straddleing the Millennium.
Reading the Calatrava bridge like an epochal fresco would be sustainable from a impassive point of view in art history, if only the bridge would promise to last with the city. The engineering Frankenstein we are talking about is not really worth any sub speciae aeternitatis consideration. Ponte dee Zonte" (bridge of the Adjuncts), and just untill it lasts: Angelo, the witty surveyor from Mestre is right. Till it lasts, because how to trust that oscillation cycles were well calculated? Maybe not everyone knows that bridges are like oscillating pendulums. under effect of the winds, and overall under a rhytmic marching of people, oscillation can become resonant, as is enter in a phenomenon of parossistic amplification of the wave, which lead the structure to disintegration. People which copes with error of meters in measurements, really guarantees of haveing took deep care of such complicate matter in projecting and realizing the Calatrava bridge of Venice? For sure we have that even in the case of a catastrophic event, it would be nearly impossible in a regular trial, to distribute responsabilities and faults. |
