Accademia Gallery

The Accademia Gallery is the Art Museum of Venice. It has one of the world’s greatest collection of masterpieces of Venetian painting up to the 18th century.
The collection is generally arranged chronologically though some thematic displays are also evident.

It was founded in 1784 by the grand duke Pietro Leopoldo. In 1807 during the invasion Napoleon, the Accademia was moved to its present premises.

This administration had disbanded many institutions in Venice including some churches, convents and schools. The Scuola della Caritą, the Convento dei Canonici Lateranensi and the church of Santa Maria della Caritą thus became the home of the Accademia.

Some of the Masters, whose are collected here, are:
Gentile Bellini, Giovanni Bellini, Canaletto (Antonio Canal), Caravaggio, Vittore Carpaccio, Rosalba Carriera, Francesco Guardi, Giorgione (da Castelfranco), Pietro Longhi, Lorenzo Lotto, Andrea Mantegna , Giambattista Piazzetta, Giambattista Tiepolo, Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti), Titian (Tiziano Vecellio), Paolo Veronese (Paolo Caliari)

Highlights of the collection include:
"The Tempest", by Giorgione
Giovanni Bellini's "San Giobbe Alterpiece"
Titian's "Pieta"
Portraits by Rosalba Carriera (one of the rare female artists of the late Baroque period.)
